Origins

The album was a major blockbuster, but it was not without its share of problems. The record companies placed the band under pressure to release the top single or they would rescind them. Luckily for Toto, they did, with the assistance of the smash single "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery owes a lot to their prior experience since the members were session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts before starting the group. Their sonic trademark has become the standard for  1980s music, and has inspired a lot of contemporary artists.

The album opens with a strong and pounding sound with tracks like Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write amazing AOR songs that slowly work their hooks into you. However, the album also includes some slower, more jazzy tracks, like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations, a song that mixes folk with distortion AOR and could sound totally wrong, but is incredibly effective.

After Toto IV The band's fortunes changed to the downside. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career and the band was through several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the group due to drug charges. The band continued with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.

Toto released Isolation despite the turmoil. It wasn't as popular as IV. The group managed to release a chart-topping album, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. This album marked the conclusion of the original Toto lineup and was also the first album to feature a new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet style of the previous albums. It was a stronger, more consistent effort that had a harder edge than Hydra. Its edgier sound reflected the maturation of the group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's greater virtuosity on drums, and a more confident, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard skills were also sharper, more complex, and less derivative on earlier efforts.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded the band's Amsterdam live performance that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The group released their new studio album just a few months after and then embarked on a tour around the world to support the album. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to discover songs that had never been recorded prior to. The album was released as a double album titled Then & Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band not to feature a single song with the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and vocalist Williams suffered from a bad laryngitis condition which hampered his singing. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming duties were replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the original members of Asia The original Asia members met in England early in 2006 to discuss the possibility that the group could be revived. The lineup, with the exception of Howe who was busy with Yes at the period, was later renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also featured an appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
